Dehydroepiandrosterone
(DHEA) is one of the hormones made by the adrenal glands (also called the 'stress glands') which sit atop each kidney. It is known as a precursor hormone. In other
words, it is converted by the adrenals into numerous other hormones.
Since experiments have shown that DHEA levels naturally decrease with age, it has been assumed that the aging
process can be slowed by supplementing with the hormone. Millions of people are now takin g DHEA without a true knowledge
of its long-term effects.
Oftentimes when the body is given a hormone, the gland that would normally produce the hormone stops performing
that function. Under these circumstances it's not unusual to develop a dependency on an outside source for the hormone.
The biggest problem with hormone supplementation, however, is trying to determine what effects the extra
hormone (estrogen) will have on seemingly unrelated body functions.
Research has shown that more DHEA in the blood can result in a higher risk of breast cancer. Those women
with the highest DHEA levels, were four times more likely to develop breast cancer than the women with the lowest DHEA levels.
In males, a similar situation could result in increased testosterone production, which could stimulate prostate cancer.
